Email Stable News

Mary Mattgalane
-------
CyberBeach 2nd in Chill Series Leg.
Then sells for $70,000! Bye Guy, we'll miss you.

9.7.99 - CB romps to new mark!

The Email Stable was a partnership formed, in 1997, through the Internet, to own and race standardbred horses. We purchased Cyberbeach and Mary Magdalene were purchased as yearlings and raced as 2 and 3 year olds. Their saga follows and their pedigrees are available. This stable, perhaps more than the others, gave us a number of highs and lows; Mary's trip to the Breeder's Crown Final, CB's being unable to stay flat well into his 3YO season and then winning a leg of the NJSS! It was quite a time.

The members of the stable were from New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., New Hampshire, Michigan, California and Ontario.

Jan. 17 - Email Stable is history. CB fetches $70,000!

CB has fetched $70,000 at the Big M sale! Ralph actually bid, for a group of partners, up to 55K but the bidding went beyond our means. CB finished a respectable 4th the next day in his Chill Series leg, race timed in 53.4. Good luck CB, we hate to see you go.

Jan. 11 - CB roars down the stretch - 2nd in Chill Series leg!

CyberBeach came from 7th at the 3/4 to, as is his style, roar down the stretch for 2nd in his swansong for the Email Stable. The 2-5 choice, Mystic Man, who romped in the Valedictory was tryingto wire the field but broke in the final turn and was last. Armbro Speedway, who Ouellette spurned for CB took the lead briefly but gave way to the flying Rhyall Hanover who got the perfect trip. CB outkicked the others, closing in 28 flat.

We'll all remember CB and his last few months with us with a big 'what if'. Maybe we'll find out what could have been as CB roars in the new millenium.

Dec. 31 - CB comes late for third in Valedictory Final

Mario Baillargeon again brought CB, at 18-1, roaring down the stretch for a nice chunk of the purse. Odds on favorite Ronjon Surfshopper suffered from the overland trip and faded badly to 9th.

Dec. 23 - CB rallies down the stretch, gets third to make final of Valedictory

After 2 breaks in a row Mario Baillargeon, driving CB, was understandably conservative and kept the lad minding his matters at the back but when Mario let him loose down the stretch CB flew home for the third place money and a spot in the final next week.

Nov. 13 - CyberBeach third in NJSS Final!

CyberBeach left sharply to the rail as the 1,2, and 4 jockied for the lead; the 1, Banker Jack, heavily favored with 123K for the year. After the half the 4 moved first over adn CB responded, going with him ... but the 4 faltered and Jeff Gregory, on CB, hesitated and then was helpless as the 7, Drivers Ed, third choice in the betting with 74K and a 1.51 flat, blew by with a powerful brush to win going away. CB was pushed back to 6th but, luckily, when they turned for home, found room on the inside to close strongly for third.

Some of the partners feel he mighta won; this reporter thinks the 7 was too much today but CB might well have been second. The favored 1, by the way, died. Read the lines.

Oct. 12 - CB short in big effort

CB put in a real solid effort, going to the front by the half and giving way at the top of the lane but then coming back! And look at those fractions in 48F weather. Three moves, the last one being to fight back after having been headed at the top of the lane.

Sept. 28 - Mary makes big move, fades

Mary, as the 3-2 favorite from the rail, didn't leave but moved up quickly after the 1/4. She got cover, but the cover cleared just after the half, leaving her first-over. She made a mild bid for the lead before beginning to fade past the 3/4's when the effort took its toll and she finished a distant eighth.

Sept 27 - CyberBeach Fades

Cyber Beach appeared to be his usual self til half-way down the lane. Though he didn't get beat much, he faded to seventh in the eight horse field. He appears to have a bug that has been doing the rounds.

Sept 17 - CyberBeach benefits from DQ to take NJSS leg

Driver Luc Ouelette left with CB from the 7 was 3rd to the quarter and lead to the half in 56.1 Just before the 3/4, Power of Art swept past CB and continued on for an apparent open length victory. CB hung tough and fought off a couple of horses to salvage 2nd timed in 1:53.0. However, Power of Art interfered with Dealer's Ace when he pulled and was set all the way back to seventh and the winners share of the $27K+ was ours. The other divisions were MUCH faster than ours with Die Lute in 51.3 off a 26.1 final quarter (strangely Soulofthematter won that in 51.0 and was taken down to 7th also) and Drivers Ed in 56.4 off a 26.4 closing quarter.

August 3 - CB Awesome!

Cyberbeach wins!

After his recent troubles Cyberbeach had been entrusted to Bill Robinson to see what new scenery/ideas might develop. Well tonight our youngster put it all together with a 4 wide move to come the last half in .56, closing 28.2 into a strong headwind to win in 1:55.1.

July 17 - Old Story - CB breaks again

On again, off again. This week was the off week. CyberBeach broke at the 3/4s and finished a distanced 7th. Less than a month ago this horse closed in .26 and change. Now the next step is uncertain.

July 10 - CB a respectable 4th

CB rebounded well, stayed on pace and closed to within 2 lengths. Doug said to Stew that CB was good the whole mile and if Wall had not come out under him at the 3/4's - breaking his momentum - he would have won the race.

Mary has been jogging and has been trained. Maybe a mid-August return to the track?

July 3 - CB breaks

The break was from catching his foot in the knee boot so an equipment change should clear that up.

June 28 - CB a fast closing third to a 53.3!

Sat back did nothing into the stretch but closed in sub 27!!! We were second choice to the odds on favorite who won.

June 14 - CB finally flies

Here's a race to get the blood flowing. Cyber Beach threw in two 28.3 quarters with the last into a headwind. Certainly a major major step forward.

CB was way back most of the way, closed to 7 lengths but didn't really make up time on the winner who really closed a ton.

pre-Miss NJ - Mary Scratched

Total Bummer! Mary had to be scratched lame from the Miss NJ. But, on the other hand, Cyber Beach is in to go for Monday.

May 29 - Mary M easily makes Miss New Jersey Final!

Mary Matt raced well tonight, and got the job done, finishing sixth by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:53.4. It looked to me like she had some trouble in the first turn ... then was following the eventual winner (the other half of our entry) - but somehow Celebrity Ball squeezed out, and we ended up three wide on the last turn. Here's the program.

May 28 - Cyber Beach shows some kick!

Out of the 2 hole Doug took back and sat 6th with a 2 length gap front and back. He pretty much sat this way until the stretch when he closed 5 lengths to finish 4th by a head in 1:56.4 with our last quarter timed in 28.4, First steps, maybe but a nice showing!

May 22 - Cyber Beach last but flat

Sitting 10th all the way around the track, CB actually closed 8 lengths in a :59 last half, race timed in 1:59. He did stay flat though.

May 21 - MM comes a ton again, finishes 3rd.

Mary, from the rail was a very leisurely 6th by 11 at the half which went in a fast :56. Then she flew, coming her half in :56:2 to get a third by 2 lengths.

May 14 - Cyber Beach qualifies!

Cyber Beach sat the three hole til just before the 3/4's, before Stew tipped him out, and came uncovered down the lane. The colt came home on his own, pacing his last quarter in :28.1 or so, and getting beat by about a head in 1:59.2.

May 11 - Mary makes a minor move!

At the half Mary was 7th by 15 lengths as, apparently, 2 youngsters went on a tear. (finishers 1-4 were all 10+ lengths out) At the 3/4s she was 3 wide and winging and she came home on a roll putting in a :56 half and winning by 3 lengths. 1:55 is a new mark.

April 28 - heading north and raring to go

MM has a new lifetime mark!! In a qualifier she was three lengths off the pace in a 1:31 3/4's, and cruised on to win in 1:59 - with her last quarter in :27.2. Later in the week she went a stiff training mile coming the final half in :57.

CB trained barefoot this week. Stew says he is considering jogging and training the colt with shoes on, but just racing him with toe-shoes. The colt did not act up, and trained a mile in 2:02. Later in the week he trained in 2:00 - with a last 1/2 in :57 ... with NO miscues.

Both horses will be heading north by the 1st; MM is ready for the box and CB should be qualified by mid month. Lets Go!!!

mid-April - Progress ...

CYBER BEACH was trained yesterday in 1:58, but still has some problems keeping flat. The colt is sound ... shows no heat anywhere, drives straight, and doesn't get on a line etc. The breaking business is still an enigma.

MARY MATTGALANE trained in 2:06 yesterday. Stew says he is still building her up, and is training her every other day. He says she is not blowing as badly as she had been, and is rounding into form.

March 28 - Coming Along

Mary Mattgalane has trained down to 2:11, with a speedier last half and Stew is pleased with her progress. CYBER BEACH has been training in 2:10 - with a back half in :59, and is set for 2:04 this week and, hopefully, will qualify the following two Wednesday in Orlando, before shipping to Mohawk.

February 23, 1999 - Early Season Progress

Cyber Beach has been training in and around 2:20-2:25. Stew reports he has been doing it well, and has been strong and with a good attitude. He has not been showing the tendency to break thus far.

Mary Mattgalane has been returning to form quite well, and Stew is pleased with her progress.

November 14 - MM not herself in Breeders Crown

Mary never got into the flow of the race and finished last in our disappointing season finale. She is now enjoying her winter vacation in Florida.

November 7 - MM closes a ton for third; Final next!!

Mary raced the the back and was last and moving wide as they entered the loong Colonial Downs stretch. And she came and came, about a head off Her Mattjesty ($367K) and a length back of Future Millbank ($256K but unraced less than a month ago!). Her elim went in 1:54+.

November 1 - MM is 5th in Trillium

Racing from the rear, Mary was blocked but came on for a respectable 5th in 1:56.4. She'll go to Virgina for the Breeders Crown!!

October 20 - MM 2nd against older company in 1:55.2

October 8 - Cyber Beach Breaks again, Turned Out

Cyber Beach broke stride just after the 1/4 pole. Stew moved him along for the last three quarters, and the colt responded with a very impressive fourth place finish. Rather than face the spectre of qualifying for a fourth time, Cyber Beach will be turned out for the season.

September 29 - Cyber Beach Qualifies in 1:58.3

Trainer Stew Firlotte took Cyber Beach safely around the Mohawk oval, racetimed third by two lengths in the 1:58.1 mile. Cyber Beach paced his own mile in 1:58.3 and last quarter in :28 flat.

September 12 - Cyber Beach Breaks Stride AGAIN

With Doug Brown in the bike, Cyber Beach again broke stride - this time just at the top of the stretch. He seemed poised to tip off second-over cover when he made the inexplicable miscue.

September 5 - Cyber Beach Qualifies

With Stew driving, Cyber Beach sat third through the early fractions of :31, 1:01, 1:30. Stew tipped him out in the stretch, and he picked up the horse in front of him, finishing second in the 1:59 mile - officially timed in 2:00.

September 5 - Mary Mattgalane 6th in the Harvest Stakes

Mary Mattgalane never really got into this race, racing last throughout the mile, and only picking up one horse in the stretch. She evidently does not like the Woodbine surface.

August 31 - Cyber Beach Breaks Stride

Cyber Beach made an inauspicious debut, making a mysterious stand-still break at the quarter pole, and finishing distanced in the 1:56.4 mile - he will now have to re-qualify.

August 29 - Mary Mattgalane Tires in the Stretch

In her first start in 20 days, Mary Mattgalane was hustled out fifth to the 26.2 first quarter. Just before the half (:57) Mary was pulled first over and challenged Sweetheart Pace finalist Court A Card to the 1:27.2 3/4's. Still second at the top of the lane, Mary tired in the last 1/16, fading to 8th in the 1:55.3 mile.

August 25 - Cyber Beach Qualifies in 2:00.2

Cyber Beach qualified third at Mohawk today. He left second through the :31.1 first quarter, and was shuffled to third at the 1:01 half. Just before the 3/4's, reached in 1:30.4, another youngster tried in vain to go by Cyber Beach, who paced home in an individual :29.1 in the 1:59.3 mile.

August 8 - MM paces 1:54.4 in 2nd start!

Mary Mattgalane left well, being sixth by 8 lengths to the :26.3 quarter. She pulled behind the cover of the favorite, and was parked fifth (by 3) at the half, in :57.4. Mary Matt remained on the outside to 1:26 3/4 and gained a length in the lane, finishing fourth by two lengths in the 1:54.2 mile.

July 28 - MM impressive in 1:59.2 debut

Mary Matt sat last through the 29.1 first quarter, and pulled and began moving up slowly on the outside past the 1:01.1 half. She kept coming uncovered to within a length at the 1:31 3/4's. Mary kept grinding on the outside, with Strauss barely urging her, collaring FB late in the lane, drawing off to win. Major mile ... :57 last half :28 last quarter, with a flat tire into a headwind!

July 18 - MM wins schooler, set to race.

Stew left from the four, was atop at the quarter and on the rail through fractions of :31, 1:02 and 1:30.1, though shuffled back to third. Stew pulled off the wood just past the 3/4's, and let her ramble down the lane to win by a length in 2:00 flat. Mary came her last 1/4 in 29.1, and her last half in 57.4.

June 27 - MM does her schooler

Mary Mattgalane finished a close third in her schooler this morning. Out of the 2-hole, she left fifth through a 29.4 first quarter, and sat that way till after the 1:01.4 half. She was up and moving at the 1:31.1 3/4's, and finished third by a length or so in the 2:01.3 mile. Last half in :59.4; probably individually timed in :58.4. She was "eager and strong in the lane".

Cyber Beach trained in 2:18. He has a bit of a virus; but is coming along well. We'll be taking it easy with him until that gets cleared up.

March 29 - Brother to MM wins trendsetter division.

Old Hickory, the only other offspring of Naraculous, is now 5 for 5 having won his division of the Trendsetter in 1:54. If he continues to improve this can only enhance MM's value as a mare.

End-March 1998 - Cyber Beach and Mary Mattgalane progressing well.
