Pensive, like most of the Seth and Lana Rosenfeld-owned yearlings, was trained throughout her career by Ray Remmen. Remmen also drove in the lion’s share of her 69 lifetime starts.
As a two-year old, Pensive was lightly raced, yet illustrated brilliance in her campaign. In her eight starts (8; 4-1-3), the daughter of first-crop sire Jate Lobell sprinted six miles with last quarters of :28 seconds or faster, and three miles in which she paced in 1:55. At DuQuoin on August 20, 1991, Pensive won the Hayes Memorial, capturing both heats (1:55.2 and 1:54.1) of that Grand Circuit race. Noteably, in the 1:54.1 mile she paced her own last half mile in :55.2 seconds. Despite never being in a race for more than $34,000, Pensive earned $55,150 as a freshman.
At three, Pensive won four races and was second another four times in her 14 starts. Her most remarkable race was a 1:54.3 win over Giggle Box in a Kentucky Sires Stake. Although she earned a respectable $52,441, Pensive did not live up to the promise exhibited in her 2-year-old year.
As a four year old in 1993, Pensive raced a full campaign of 35 starts. Competing largely over half-mile ovals, she won 11 races and was 23 times in the top three, while banking $131,835 on the year. She regularly competed against the likes of Camorous, Sara Loren Rd, Dandy Promise and Paris Spur, and was race-timed 13 times in 1:55 or faster, including four winning miles. The most memorable of these occurred at Yonkers Raceway on June 25, when Jim Morrill Jr. sent Pensive down the road through fractions of :27.2; :54.4; 1:23.2, before opening up in the stretch in a World Record 1:52.2 mile!
The mark obliterated Shady Daisy’s previous all-age standard (1:53.3), as well as the previous 4-year-old world record of Shay’s Pride (1:54.2), and was one-fifth of a second slower than the record for 4-year-old stallions (1:52.1), set by the incomparable Artsplace! The standard stood for two years as an all-age record for distaffs, and until 1996 as the 4-year-old mark. In both cases, She’s A Great Lady eclipsed Pensive.
Jate Lobell has been the leading sire of 2-year-old speed since Pensive and her couterparts from his first crop hit the track in 1991. Already, Jate’s daughters are exhibiting the ability to endow their offspring with speed to burn. Pensive hails from a maternal family replete with 1:55 performers reaching back three generations, and that the richest of these performers have been fillies. So, let’s hope the trend continues with Pensive Princess!
